All About Exeter International Airport (EXT)
The main terminal handled over 1 million passengers in 2007 and has grown to offer a full compliment of scheduled, charter and holiday flights to over 50 destinations throughout Europe. The airport is currently owned part by Devon County Council and Balfour Beatty trading as Regional and City Airports Ltd.
The History of Exeter Airport
The original airfield was used as a flying clubs base having been constructed in 1937 and formally opened on 30 July 1938 as Exeter Airport. During the Second World War the airfield was increased to 3,000 ft (North to South) and the field served as a base for RAF Exeter during the Battle of Britain.
The following squadrons were based at Exeter Airport:
- No 213 Squadron from 18 June 1940
- No 87 Squadron from 5 July 1940
- No 601 Squadron from 7 September 1940
During the war some technical building were destroyed although the main runway was left unscathed.
Exeter International Airport After The War
The RAF had a base at Exeter Airport until the 1950's when the first commercial charter flights started taking off. A new terminal was opened during the 1980's and the runway extended in the 1990's. The airport now serves as a major base for Flybe and many other carriers.
